ROAD SAFETY EDUCATION IN CAMEROON SCHOOLS

Introduction:

The increasing injuries and death toll registered from road accidents in the world makes Road Safety education very important. According to the Ohio department of public safety, 4700 pedestrians are killed and 61000 are injured in traffic crashes every year. In most cases, when there is an accident people tend to blame the driver first. They always forget that pedestrians could be sometimes reckless and or absent minded, especially kinds. This makes Road safety is a human rights issue, a development matter. Without proper pavements, people are forced to move within traffic. Most children and young people make decisions that keep them safe in and around traffic. However, everyday children and young people may find themselves in hazardous traffic situations. According to www.makeroadssafe.org, a child dies every 3 minutes from road accident in the world. This is a serious health issue for by 2002,

Former American President Bill Clinton once said the issue after a war is not who is right but who is left. The training every youth gets today leaves him/her with the right knowledge on how to act in society always. The future is beautiful for those who see and act in creating this beautiful environment. An accident of a few seconds leaves lasting effects. The collective action of every actor in making our roads safe is very important; here we are talking about the relationship between road users and the road. In a nutshell;

  • Pedestrians road use priority

  • Driving and driver behavior

  • Road signs and respect of these by all

The Highway Code or laws of the road is a set of rules and regulations relating to the use of roads ie, road sides, pavements, highways, etc. by road users (pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, etc.). In most countries it’s put as part of responsible citizenship. Failure to comply with the provisions of the Highway Code exposes the offender to penalties ranging from fines to jail time; depending on the gravity of the offense.
